Storage Tips
Smallest Space
Rent the smallest amount of space you’ll need — and pack it efficiently.
Gather Materials
Have boxes, tape, markers, and packing materials (e.g., bubble wrap, towels) ready before starting.
Uniform Sizes
Use uniformly sized boxes to make stacking easier and safer.
Inventory
Keep a detailed inventory stored safely at home or in a secure digital location.
Prepare Your Space
Place a protective cover on the floor before storing anything.
Keep It Dry
Elevate items on 2x4s or pallets to avoid contact with cold or damp concrete floors.
Plan for Access
Store frequently accessed items near the front of your unit.
NO Combustibles
Never store flammables like gasoline, solvents, or paint.
Create Aisles
Leave a center aisle for easy access and air circulation.
Stack Smart
Heavy boxes on the bottom, light boxes on top.
Box Strength
Use strong boxes that can support 25–30 lbs — but don’t overfill them.
Label Everything
List contents on all four sides of boxes, number them, and seal with tape.
Wrap It Up
Wrap dishes and glasses in paper. Use sturdy boxes and place them on top.
Fragile Items
Wrap pictures and mirrors in cardboard, mark as “FRAGILE,” and store on end.
Furniture Storage
Use drawers to store smaller items. Wrap them in towels or blankets.
Use Appliances
Store linens or clothing inside clean large appliances.
Protect Electronics
Store TVs and electronics at the back of your unit.
Trash Can Hack
Store rakes, shovels, and hoses in empty trash cans. Nest extra cans together.
Break Down Tables
Remove legs from tables to save floor space.
Stand Sofas Upright
Store sofas/loveseats on end. Wrap cushions and place them on top.
Mind the Weight
Avoid placing heavy or sharp items on upholstered furniture.
Cover Furniture
Use blankets or cardboard to keep dust off stuffed furniture.
Mattress Care
If standing upright, make sure mattresses stay straight to avoid warping.
Prevent Rust
Wipe down metal items with machine oil before storage.
